LAKE ERIE BEACH CLEANUP

  • Sterling State Park 2800 State Park Road Monroe, MI, 48162 United States (map)

Join The Cleanup Club and 86 Plastic as we cleanup Lake Erie’s shoreline together! 🌊

A special thank you to our event sponsors: HAY! Straws. 💙 We're so excited to share some of their incredible straws with you made from literal straw! (Bye single-use plastic straws! 👋)

Every year 22+ million pounds of plastic pollution enters our Great Lakes, with an estimated 5.5 million of that ending up in Lake Erie. Which is why we’re heading back to do some good! 🪣🧤 All trash we collect will be weighed, counted and categorized with the help of volunteers for Great Lakes plastic pollution research & advocacy efforts. (It’s not glamorous, but it matters!)

WHAT TO KNOW:

  • Our goal is to cleanup Lake Erie’s shoreline while having fun!

  • Everyone & anyone is welcome!

  • All cleanup materials will be provided.

  • A state park fee will NOT be required. Please let the entrance attendant know you are participating in a volunteer cleanup event.

  • Rain or shine!

WHERE TO MEET:

  • We’ll be meeting on the beach. Drive to the south end of the park and park in the last parking lot (right before the camping area entrance) and walk to the beach.

WHAT TO BRING:

  • A reusable water bottle so you can stay hydrated without single-use plastic bottles. 🌎

MEET OUR PARTNERS:

86 Plastic is a low waste refillery offering bulk goods and plastic-free items located in Troy, Michigan. Claire Mahler opened the shop after taking a gap year from teaching and following her passion to share sustainability with her community. Inspired by years of working in the restaurant industry and the number "86” meaning “no longer available”, the shop was created to help you make small swaps in efforts to cut out single-use plastics!

MEET OUR EVENT SPONSORS:

An estimated 500 million plastic straws are used in the U.S. alone every day! 🤯 But HAY! Straws is helping replace single-use straws that end up in our landfills, lakes & ocean with an alternative made from literal straw! Through the process of harvesting wheat, hay (also known as straw), is made into animal feed, or in their case - drinking straws! Made from nothing but a plant, these straws can be tossed directly into the compost bin, and unlike plastic straws will naturally breakdown. 🌿

We hope to see you there! 😊
